Round 6 Carina Leagues Club TIGERS v COUGARS

Brisbane East Netball Match Report    28 July 2019

Somerset Sports Centre at Ormiston College was the venue for Brisbane East Netball’s first home game of the season. With the Carina Leagues Club TIGERS taking on rivals from across the river, Brisbane North COUGARS, there was plenty of action both on and off the court. Brisbane East Netball fans turned up in large numbers to support the TIGER teams and enjoy some great netball.

The 14 year old Metro and Redlands Rep teams played a curtain raiser for the Sapphire game while the Under 10s from Sandgate Hawks and RNA’s Allstars and Sharks clubs, provided the half-time entertainment. With a cross-river shooting competition, raffles, face painting, barbeque and a visit from the Carina Leagues Club TIGER, the atmosphere was almost festive.

On court, the COUGARS out-played the TIGERS in the Sapphire game, winning 55 to 40, in a very defensive encounter. Best in defence for the TIGERS was Chanel Gomes, in her first game back from a 4 week break. Alana Schuster at centre in the first half, made some great plays, with strong drives and quick ball delivery. Although there were patches of awesome attack line plays, TIGER’S lapses in concentration allowed COUGARS plenty of possession which the BrisNorth team took advantage of, dominating in attack and building on their first quarter lead.

The TIGERS Ruby team maintains top position on their ladder after a win over the third-placed COUGARS. With both captains sidelined by injury, the young TIGERS lifted their game and played with confidence and control. The circle defence pairing of Maddie Ryan and Rianah Childs, contested strongly and provided plenty of ball which their attacking end were able to capitalise on early. Leading by 4 goals at half-time, the TIGERS increased the pressure in the second half, showing discipline and determination to win the game 46 to 38.

Next week the TIGERS Sapphire team travel to Mackay to play the Round 7 game against the Northern Rays while the Ruby team play Panthers in Toowoomba.
