After a long pre-season the players were excited and a little nervous to be starting the competition.

Wildcats got off to a great start finding their shooters with ease and disrupting the Cougars attacking patterns. Wildcats looked more confident with the ball while Cougars appeared hesitant and slow to release the ball. Wildcats 17 yr old goal attack, Rylie Batcheldor was playing with maturity and confidence finding space in the goal circle and going to the post with 100% accuracy. Wildcats went to the break 19 – 15 up and took the bonus point for the quarter .

Cougars were a little more competitive in the second quarter but they were still struggling to move the ball at speed through the court. Wildcats strong defence through the whole court continually created turnovers. The injection of Mia Stower half way through the quarter changed the Cougars attacking structure and saw them start to find the goals a little easier. Wildcats won the quarter 16 – 15. Half time score Wildcats 35 – Cougars 30.

Cougars looked more confident after the half time break. Both Maddie Hinchliffe (WD) and Ruby Bakewell Dorian (GD) were starting to turn over the ball defensively, and Remi Kamo was causing some confusion for the Wildcats’ feeders. The extra ball supply along with a better shooting percentage meant Cougars were able to close the gap. Wildcats were now a little less confident in their attacking end giving Cougars a few more scoring opportunities. Wildcats went into the break with a two goal lead 50 – 48 giving Cougars their first bonus point.

From the start of the last quarter, Cougars played with more intensity and seemed more confident to drive strongly into the spaces. In a tight exciting quarter, both teams produced some polished netball with less unforced errors. Each team was working overtime in defence.  Quick ball movement and smooth transitions all over the court saw the teams going goal for goal for much of the quarter. Cougars took the lead for the first time in the game with 2 minutes left. Wildcats weren’t to be denied with goal keeper Aldora Tuala taking an intercept and sending the ball down to her shooters to draw the game 63 – 63.

Wildcats took the bonus points for the first two quarters and Cougars the bonus points for the final two quarters.

Brisbane North Cougars return to QSNC on Tuesday 2 July to face the Ipswich Jets at 7:40pm.
