27 Jul RAYS SEASON REIGNITED BY CARINA LEAGUES CLUB
The Carina Leagues Club has stepped up to support the Northern Rays to host Round 7 of the HART Sapphire Series.
Carina Leagues Club Board Chair Wade Core said that when the Tigers learned the Northern Rays were unable to play without financial help to cover costs, they immediately wanted to help.
“It is absolutely vital that we keep the Northern Rays on the court and playing. There aren’t enough opportunities for elite female athletes in regional Queensland and the Sapphires competition answers that need,” he said.
“For me, it was a no brainer that we should help, and last night the Board met and agreed that we would contribute the funds required to get the Rays back on court for Round 7 of the competition, with the Tigers travelling to Mackay. It’s a demonstration of our commitment to the sport and to the competition,” he said.
Netball Queensland CEO Catherine Clark thanked Mr Core and the Carina Leagues Club Board for their action.
“There really is something unique and special about netball. The netball spirit, the sense of community is powerful. And that’s what we are seeing in action here with the wonderful sponsorship from the Carina Leagues Club. Wade and his team are huge supporters of netball and community sport in general,” she said.
“The netball family pulls together in times of need and to see a rival club step forward to put money on the table to help a club out is quite extraordinary,” she said.
“Now we’re calling on the Mackay community to buy tickets and support these two teams as they take the court in this fantastic show of solidarity – and rivalry,” she said.
Netball Queensland GM High Performance and Sports Entertainment Richard McInnes said all key stakeholders had been working very hard behind the scenes to ensure the good news doesn’t stop there.
“We are very confident that the Rays will be able to finish the season and we are equally confident that we will have a viable solution for them that will see them thriving through to the 2021 season,” he said.
“I am optimistic that we will have something ready to announce before Round 8 of the competition,” he said.
The Northern Rays will play the Tigers in a Rays home game in Mackay in Round 7 of the HART Sapphire Series on Saturday, 3 August at 1.30pm. The Tigers currently sit in fourth place on the ladder, with 36 points. The Rays remain winless in seventh place.
